Update on the Earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand - 11am Friday 25 February 2011

We have received many messages of support for the people in New Zealand following the earthquake in Christchurch this week. All these kind words have been passed on to our colleagues and suppliers and they have all expressed how grateful they are that so many people are thinking of them at this difficult time.

We have now managed to contact everyone with whom we work in Christchurch and we are pleased to say that they and their immediate families are all fine, but trying to come to terms with the situation. However, all of our thoughts are still with everyone who has been affected by this tragic event and the ongoing rescue effort.

Rugby New Zealand 2011 (RNZ 2011) is the organisation responsible for the planning and delivery of the Tournament. In an update this week its CEO Martin Snedden said: “It is too early to talk in any detail about implications for the Tournament in Christchurch and any assessment by us must wait while the rescue efforts take priority.

There has been speculation that this tragedy puts the entire event in jeopardy or that matches will relocate to Australia. That is not the case. Rest assured, RWC 2011 will proceed and all matches will take place in New Zealand.”

As we detailed in our earlier update this week, Tourism New Zealand, and other regional authorities have stated that all regions outside of the Canterbury area are unaffected. This includes Queenstown, Auckland and Rotorua.
