MAKING MURRAYFIELD MEMORIES
Dublin, Rome and Paris have already been ticked off – and now John Carpenter is setting his sights on an explosive Edinburgh showdown between Scotland and England in the 2012 RBS 6 Nations Championship.
Murrayfield will be crammed to the rafters for one of the most eagerly anticipated starts to the RBS 6 Nations Championship for years. The Calcutta Cup will be up for grabs amid the firework smoke, the pipers and a thumping Scottish atmosphere when the two rivals collide on Saturday 4 February.
“We have really enjoyed the atmosphere in Dublin and Paris the times we have gone but the 16 or so of us who follow England have never been to Edinburgh so it will be a great new experience,” said John, who is a regular at England matches at home and abroad.
“I expect the atmosphere in Edinburgh to be a little more raucous but we will have a two night stay, enjoy a drink or two in the build up to the game and then enjoy Sunday in the city as we have a bit of an explore.”
England’s trip to Murrayfield will be an immediate re-match from their Rugby World Cup pool game – a contest John saw at Eden Park – but England will have gone through a major change by the time the tournament reaches kick off.
“The crowds are just fantastic,” John said, who has also been a member of the England Rugby Supporters’ Club for nine years. “I was at Rugby World Cup 2011 matches against Scotland and France and the atmosphere was great – even though England lost.
“I think that is what marks rugby out as different – the fans can mingle and have a drink together.
“We are all ex-rugby players who have got together over the years and we have never been to Edinburgh before – it will be something different and one of the most exciting things is that we don’t know what is going to happen with England.
“The slate has been wiped clean and it will be a chance to see where we are after Rugby World Cup.”
