KAREN JOINING BIGGEST RUGBY PARTY EVER
Rugby heaven – that is what awaits the thousands of England fans preparing to head to Rugby World Cup 2011 and Karen Wright is ready to join one giant rugby club.
That is the New Zealand welcome in store for the thousands of England fans heading to Rugby World Cup 2011, according to Karen Wright.
She will join the mobilised army of England fans who will flood into the country to follow England’s bid to win their second Rugby World Cup.
“It just feels like the whole country is one giant rugby club,” she said. “If you want passion and if you want to really love your rugby then nowhere compares to New Zealand.
“It can be a shop assistant, taxi driver, in a hotel or in a bar – everyone knows and understands the game, has an opinion on who should be playing or coaching and just loves to talk about rugby. It’s impossible not to get the sense you are in the middle of one giant rugby club. The feeling it creates is infectious.
“I am just looking forward to mixing with lots of different rugby fans – it is the variety that makes Rugby World Cup so special.”
Karen has booked an ‘Explorer’ package which means all her match tickets and travel arrangements are guaranteed but she will use a motor home to tour the country in between games – as many England fans have already experienced with England Rugby Travel.
An avid England fan, Karen will be staying for the Scotland game and the knockout stages.
“I have been lucky enough to go to New Zealand before with the 2005 British & Irish Lions but the Explorer option gives me great freedom to get off the beaten track, explore and see things at my own pace – they drive on the same side of the road as us so that helps too!
“I don’t think you are ever too old for a year out – and this one is mine. I will be meeting up with a friend while I am out there and combining rugby with the chance to see a great country.
“I just want the chance to walk a glacier and I am very keen to see Millford Sound and the Alps in the south. It’s such a diverse country that there is so much to see away from the rugby and that is something that really excites me.”
Karen’s love affair with rugby started at university in Wales, where she was drawn to the natural passion for the game and now her son George plays in either the second row or on the flank for Burton-on-Trent Rugby Club, where he has been involved since he was eight.
Her Explorer package means she will have plenty of time to soak up the sights and sounds of the country in between England’s tilt at a second Rugby World Cup crown.
“If they got to the Final it would be the icing on the cake of a perfect trip. I think a Rugby World Cup gels players together, England are a pragmatic side who will certainly give a good account of themselves.
“I would love to think we could reach the knockout stages and then anything is possible. I just hope we do ourselves justice.”
