GATLAND CONFIRMED AS LIONS HEAD COACH
The British & Irish Lions have confirmed that Warren Gatland will take the position of head coach for the 2013 Tour to Australia, leading a squad of the best of the home nations as they jet off Down Under in June next year. The announcement puts an end to months of speculation and marks the start of The Lions season.
Gatland - who has been head coach of the Welsh national team since 2007 - toured with The Lions to South Africa in 2009 as forwards coach and, after the disappointment of a closely contested 2-1 series defeat, he will be looking to record The Lions first series victory since 1997. “It’s the highest honour to be selected as Lions Coach. It’s the pinnacle of your coaching career and to be given this opportunity is a huge privilege,” said Gatland.
It’s been 12 years since The Lions were last in Australia where they lost the series 2-1 to the Wallabies. Every British and Irish player will be dreaming of a Lions call up, to be part of this historic team and have the chance to wear the iconic red jersey with pride. As the man who can make these dreams a reality, Warren Gatland will want to be among those coaches who have led a Lions team and their magnificent supporters to victory – quite possibly the greatest honour in world rugby.
