Following victories over Argentina and Georgia on Sunday, England are in pole position to qualify from their pool and with games against Romania and Scotland to come, momentum is building.
We thought we would prepare you for the Tournament with a look back at their 2007 Rugby World Cup campaign. Here’s Jonny in the thick of the action – come on England!
Remember When..... Jonny kicked started Rugby World Cup defence, England 44, Samoa 22, Saturday 22 September 2007
England’s golden boy Jonny Wilkinson returned from injury to kick start England’s Rugby World Cup campaign with his gold-plated left peg against Samoa four years ago.
Wilkinson collected 24 points from three conversions, four penalties and two drop-goals to steer England past the bone jarringly physical Samoans and put a smile back on the face of England fans everywhere.
The iconic number 10 manufactured tries for Martin Corry with a trademark cut-out pass and also for Paul Sackey with a neat little grubber kick to help get England’s Rugby World heading into far calmer waters. Jonny was good - again.
“We got the balance right between the forwards and the backs and it came right,” try scorer Paul Sackey.
Wilkinson was in the thick of the action in France and will be again tomorrow when England’s 2011 vintage begin the quest for a third successive Final appearance with their game against Argentina.
Remember When....
Josh Lewsey try, Rugby World Cup 2007 semi-final, England Vs France
A simply great England Rugby memory. England sent the hosts of Rugby World Cup 2007 tumbling out of the Tournament with a performance of controlled physical excellence and a smash and grab try from Josh Lewsey.
Barely 80 seconds had gone when scrum-half Andy Gomarsall launched a clever kick in behind the French defence and as full-back Damien Traille pondered his fortune, Lewsey pounced to power up and over the line for the game changing score.
With Jonny Wilkinson in superlative kicking form and England’s forwards up for the battle the die was cast and a second successive Final appearance was England’s.
Remember When . . . . Mathew Tait’s run, Rugby World Cup Final 2007, England 6, South Africa 15
In some ways it was the Final no-one expected. England had struggled through the group stages to grow stronger and stronger as the Tournament progressed and now sensed an historic Rugby World Cup double.
Standing in their way were the mighty South Africans – the most powerful, remorseless side in the competition. It was always going to take a piece of genius to slice the game open and two minutes into the second half, trailing 9-3, Mathew Tait almost provided it.
Scooping up a bouncing pass from Andy Gomarsall, the Newcastle centre slashed his way through the Springbok midfield, tearing towards the line to be held only metres short by a desperate covering tackle.
Mark Cueto was denied a try via the video referee in the follow up and England’s fingers had been prized off the trophy.
