Bloemfontein - What to do

Not the largest city in South Africa, but that dosen't mean that there is less to do. Take a look at a few ideas that may take your fancy.

National Museum
The National Museum dates back to 1877, when its collections and displays comprised mainly rarities from around the world. The Main attractions are:

  • Life-size fibreglass elephants (an adult & youngsters)
  • The world-famous Florisbad skull (estimated to be 250 000 years old)
  • The only complete skeleton of Euskelosaurus (one of the earliest known dinosaurs) in the world
  • A "working" beehive
  • Live snakes and other reptiles in the new Herpetology Hall
  • Victorian Bloemfontein street scene
  • History of Bloemfontein/Mangaung

The Old Presidency

This stately Victorian building (1885) on the west side of Brand Street was the residence of three Presidents of the Boer republic of the Orange Free State. It now houses a museum devoted to the terms of office of the three Presidents - P. J. H. Brand (1864-88), P. W. Reitz (1888-95) and M.T. Stein (1896-1900) - as well as pictures and furniture.

The building is also a cultural centre used for art exhibitions, small theatrical performances and concerts.

Bloemfontein Zoo

The Bloemfontein Zoo houses the largest collection of primates in South Africa, as well as an interesting variety of birds and numerous other animals. It also houses the controversial product of the breeding between a lion and a tiger, otherwise known as the liger.

Loch Logan

Loch Logan is a popular place for a braai (similar to a barbeque) or get-together, but it's also the venue of the monthly Volksblad Art Market in Bloemfontein, where art and handcrafted items are offered for sale in a flea-market setting.

Many artists, crafters and hobbyists from Bloemfontein and surrounding areas proudly display their wares and items to the admiring public next to the Bloemfontein Zoo, on the lush lawns of Kings Park
