Edinburgh is routinely called the Athens of the north (which leads you to wonder why Athens is so rarely called the Edinburgh of the south).
Architecturally, Edinburgh is one of the great cities of Europe. Its buildings range from the medieval splendour of the castle, through the Georgian elegance of the New Town, to the striking and eye-wateringly expensive curves of the Scottish Parliament.
Edinburgh's match-day atmosphere is best experienced on the bracing walk to Murrayfield from the city centre. The rich smells of the city's breweries fill the air, jostling for attention with squalls of bagpipe music and throaty renditions of Flower of Scotland.
It is also worth spending some time in the car park area behind the west stand, where old friends meet as the pre-match tension builds. A home victory will keep the atmosphere alive long into the night (particularly the brewery smells).
